Eikaiwa Admin Dev Diary #6 - Reworking the Manager Inbox

The hot weather we're experiencing in Gifu is hurting my productivity this week, but I did manage to overhaul the "Important Notices" widget.

More than just attendance updates

Previously, a school manager could see anything pertaining to lessons on her dashboard: cancelled lessons, absent or late students, upcoming events and trial lessons.

This worked by checking the database for specific flags such as cancelled, absent, late and event... and that was all.

I spent some time rebuilding this so that any part of the Eikaiwa Admin system could hook into this widget and leave notices of the upcoming billing day, date that lessons will be archived, and payment alerts for students who failed to pay.

This adds a lot of flexibility and acts as checklist of everything a school manager needs to keep on top of.

Next steps

I really need to focus now on getting the demo ready. There are three major things that need doing:

  • Revisit staff permissions, i.e. what teachers can and can't see when logged in;
  • Information boxes on every page to explain their purpose and usage;
  • Japanese translations
