Eikaiwa Admin Dev Diary #7 - Teacher View

Just a quick update this week to say I'm currently working on filtering out everything a teacher shouldn't have access to.

Teacher view

The purpose of Eikaiwa Admin is to give a school manage control over everything related to backend operations. There are already other systems that provide a front-facing experience for students, parents and teachers.

With that in mind, I've decided to keep the teacher view simple (for now). They will have access to their schedules and notifications relevant to them, and that's it.

To be specific, the sidebar for a logged in teacher shows Dashboard, Schedule (a list of lessons), Timetable (a printable weekly timetable), and Calendar (a printable view of the school year).

Updating the dashboard is next on my list, but it will simply show "Today's lessons" for that teacher, and the notifications box. I may or may not include a data box to show hours worked this week and earnings (for part-timers).

Burden-free teaching staff

I've been in this industry for almost 30 years, and once worked as a teacher manager for a chain of schools. I know that teachers have enough on their plate already. Rather than ask them to pull out their phone in class and mark the attendance in Eikaiwa Admin, I'd much rather leave that to the school manager.

When a manager gets a phone call, LINE message or email about an absence, she can update the attendance. Otherwise, students are assumed to be present, and a teacher can check for any late or absent students on their phone before class. Easy.

Obon plans

Holidays for me are when I can get the most work done. I will absolutely finish the Teacher View stuff and push to clear more remaining tasks off my Trello project management board.
